Mario Kart Wii allows for 12-player online racing
Amidst all the Sonic celebration and delay debacle, we seemed to have a missed a crucial bit of info regarding Nintendo's other multiplayer prodigy. As 1UP graciously points out, Satoru Iwata made the formal announcement at Nintendo's Japanese press conference that Mario Kart Wii will support up to 12 players in an online race, making it the largest Mario Kart yet, and the biggest multiplayer effort on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection so far.
According to 1UP, Iwata also stated that Nintendo would attempt to streamline the matchmaking process in Mario Kart Wii. We'll go ahead and put in a "second" for that "no friend codes" request, futile though it may seem.

Feels empty, doesn't it?
Fatass of Kickassness @ Oct 11th 2007 7:58PM
Let me be the first to say, "Fuck off, kiddie". The site doesn't need any of you dumbass 'firsties'... really, no site needs them, and I don't understand the logic behind posting 'FIRST' anyway.

Raikage (NDF - PK THUNDER RING) @ Oct 11th 2007 7:44PM
LOL I didn't even read the story, I just saw the title and hit the comments link...
Yeah all of us Wii owners (holders?) will have to trade friend codes (= teh suk) with Smash Bros and Mario Kart.
Mr Khan @ Oct 11th 2007 7:56PM
Well, at least we've got USB Keyboard support, that'll streamline the sending process
But when Brawl gets out, we've got to exchange some system codes, so we'll have 'em for Kart
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 11th 2007 8:25PM
I'm in too. I call dibs on all the cool cars and characters!
Raikage (NDF - PK THUNDER RING) @ Oct 11th 2007 8:30PM
NOOOOOOO that's not fair!
I call Waluigi... sukas...
Or Solid Snake if he is in it... O Yeah like you knew he was gonna be in Smash Bros... you never know... LOL
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 11th 2007 8:40PM
I'm sorry. Nobody gets to pick any cool characters until I'm done with all of them. And if I happen to like all the characters, you'll have to let me do the first race solo to test out a track. I got dibs man. And I can SENSE if you play without me.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 11th 2007 7:33PM
YES! Other than Burnout paradise this is the only Racing game os kart game I'm looking foward too.
I hope SSB:B online rules apply as well seriously I had it with those damn teenagers calling everyone a f*g or a N***er.
Raikage (NDF - PK THUNDER RING) @ Oct 11th 2007 7:47PM
Those words are totally mapped to my up^ and right> on the D-Pad... along with the words "Dirty" and "Jew".
I'm all set!!!
Let's trade friend codes :D
Joshua @ Oct 11th 2007 7:38PM
I feel like I already knew this. But still, I'm really looking forward to this game, too. The Wii is finally getting some big games.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Oct 11th 2007 7:39PM
Glad to know that there's actually an attempt on Nintendo's part to make the online experience a bit better. I hope Voice Chat is included, because I'm speculating that thats one of the things Brawl was delayed for... boy, I hope I'm right.
Lemmiwinks @ Oct 11th 2007 7:54PM
"I hope Voice Chat is included"
Me to. Just so I can have the joy of disabling it.
GoldenS1104 @ Oct 11th 2007 8:05PM
I only find voice chat useful when I'm playing with people I Know. Otherwise, **** it.
Sitv @ Oct 11th 2007 7:48PM
Nintendo is effing up with their internet stategy... but this seems like a step in the right direction... and especially on a huge game like mario Kart

get ready to get your butt hurt with my wiisnaking!
Lemmiwinks @ Oct 11th 2007 7:57PM
Snaking is the one feature of the Mario Kart franchise that I desperately hope gets left back with the pit crew.
Joshua @ Oct 11th 2007 8:01PM
I honestly don't see what's wrong with it.
Why does no one else complain about all the similar moves in Melee?
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 11th 2007 8:02PM
I stopped playing Mario Kart DS because of snaking. I used to race under the name Snake=D/C
I know that I could have snaked as well, but it just wasn't fun to me.
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Oct 11th 2007 7:45PM
Hell yeah. this is tight.
The only thing that sucks is that my retarded internet connection usually can't handle racing games online. They lag like hell. Maybe its time to upgrade.
Agent4187 @ Oct 11th 2007 7:48PM
Oh, YES! Online Mario Kart just became more awesome. However, there is a bigger online Multiplayer on NWC than this: Metal of Honor: Heroes 2.
Lemmiwinks @ Oct 11th 2007 7:53PM
Yeah, doesn't MoH:H2 have 24 simultaneous online players?
Agent4187 @ Oct 11th 2007 7:54PM
Actually, I believe it was 32 players.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 11th 2007 7:55PM
32 I believe, the PSP version handle 32 players it was awesome too bad the campaign was so short.
Mr Khan @ Oct 11th 2007 7:57PM
Not on Nintendo WFC though, its a seperate EA-run network
mian @ Oct 11th 2007 9:45PM
32x player on EA Nation. I wish we could get first party titles on EA Nation. Or anywhere other than NWC.
Death to friend codes.
Lemmiwinks @ Oct 11th 2007 7:55PM
I *knew* it was some multiple of eight.
Gamerdad @ Oct 11th 2007 7:57PM
I wonder if the frames per second drop to 30 while online like they did on the cube while in LAN mode. That really slowed the pace of the gameplay.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 11th 2007 8:21PM
You left out...
FIRST MARIO KART TO HAVE:
ONLINE BATTLE MODE!
It's sooooo on.
badarsemother3k @ Oct 11th 2007 8:56PM
I am happy they didn't make it 16 players as that sounded a little chaotic and confusing. I cant wait for this game and the battle modes. It sure has been a good week with all the announcements.
Mr. P @ Oct 11th 2007 9:06PM
I always forget that you can play online with the Wii.
Jonny @ Oct 12th 2007 12:00AM
I always forget that you're smart enough to figure out how to connect to the internet.
GregZ @ Oct 11th 2007 9:15PM
"Largest Mario Kart effort" yet? 16 Player Double Dash with the LAN adapter was pretty large, and it was a very good time.
Pastiness @ Oct 12th 2007 1:24AM
You beat me to it. That night of 16 player double dash was one of the pinnacles of my life so far.
bm @ Oct 12th 2007 9:32AM
I thought of the same thing, but then remembered that DD is only 8 karts with two people per vehicle. 12 players, each on their own, should be different.
syco @ Oct 11th 2007 9:19PM
Still don't understand what exactly is wrong with friend codes. You can add a nickname when you enter it in, it's not like you need to memorize the code or anything. I just don't see the issue here.
iofthestorm @ Oct 12th 2007 12:27AM
Seriously, and it's not like you NEED friend codes to play online, just to find your friends. And since you've probably added your friends' system codes already, even if just for the Mii sharing features, for most people this won't be an issue. I'm pretty sure there are no per-game friend codes except for that Pokemon game, and that was only so it would be compatible with the DS versions.
syco @ Oct 11th 2007 9:20PM

gah double post.
Sorry.
syco @ Oct 11th 2007 9:23PM
Gah sorry for double post.
zwarrior @ Oct 11th 2007 11:04PM
I've been defeated so many times in the DS online version. But I bet I'll do a hell lot better in this one >:)
baby sea tuna @ Oct 12th 2007 9:06AM
Awesome news! Guess I'm keeping my Wii...
Lianne @ Oct 12th 2007 11:43AM
I think friend codes are annoying and unnecessary. Something like the Xbox Live Gamertags makes much more sense. However, that doesn't stop me from being ridiculously excited for this game and its multiplayer mayhem!
Sean @ Oct 12th 2007 12:14PM
Shit yeah, ladies, I bring those blue sparks.
exit stencil @ Oct 12th 2007 2:49PM
How do you play online if you haz no frenz?
Superstar90 @ Oct 12th 2007 6:40PM
WOO yea!
JoeyJ @ Oct 13th 2007 12:15PM
Umm... surely Medal of Honor's 32 player multiplayer is a bigger effort than Mario Kart's 12?
